Reviews - Helly Hansen Men's Odin Mountain Mk3 Shell Pants
I am a Helly Hansen Ambassador/Athlete and international mountain guide for Mountain Madness. I exclusively use Helly Hansen products all year, all around the world, alpine climbing and ski mountaineering big mountains. On my recent expedition to the Rolwaling Himalaya of Nepal HH asked me to test the Odin Mountain Pants. The pants were an essential part of my kit. Sometimes there is just no substitute for a 3 layer hardshell. In cold, windy conditions, such as those found on a daily basis in the Himalaya, a hardshell keeps you warmer, as well as drier in any precipitation. On the first ascent of 6611m Langmoche Ri, I wore the pants the entire time - they were the perfect protection from the blowing snow and wind that threatened to blow us of the ridge. I also found the pants to be a great ice climbing piece. The waterproof, yet stretchy design of the pants kept me dry but still allowed the mobility necessary when climbing. Putting up early season waterfall ice first ascents in the Rolwaling and Yalung Valleys was was wet and drippy, but the Odin Mountain Pants kept me dry and allowed me to keep climbing. It is really cool how the pants integrates with the Odin Mountain Jacket to create an impervious outfit akin the the Goretex one-pieces of years past. Or, if you prefer, use the generous bibs to seal out snow.
I bought the Odin as a ski pant. I would say it is quite slim fitting, but not small. I am 5'10'' 185 lbs and the L fit smartly, but was a tiny bit on the long side. The pant itself appears to be great quality, well made, lightweight waterproof breathable shell. Not as heavy as a gore tex pro shell and probably not as waterproof/breathable, but still very nice quality and I like the beefy reinforcements around the ankles and full zip on the leg. I have not worn it long enough to know, but the fabric does seem a bit thin around the knees and I am a bit concerned about wear in the knee area with heavy use.
