Ibex/Merino never ceases to please...
Merino wool is a terrific fiber. Ibex makes great stuff, and the zephyr is great as a base layer for aerobic activity. I skied for 2 hours in 0F temps, worked up a sweat, and the Zephyr performed flawlessly, keeping me from feeling clammy and nasty. The mid-chest length zipper helps control your temperature. I didn't stink afterwards too, as merino wool hides body odor. None of that poly-pro stink! The base layer fits smooth and taut, with few wrinkles anywhere. I am long in the torso, and the Zephyr covers me up easily.
Excellent midweight base layer
I spent quite a bit of time researching base layers until I decided to get this top. Aside from style, comfort, and temperature rating, overall garment performance and detailed information about the materials used in making it were very important to me. While other companies had impressive looking offerings, Ibex is the only manufacturer I have found that tells you in detail where their wool comes from, where their fabric is knitted, and where the garment is cut and stitched -- not just what size their fibers are and what gsm weight their fabric has. This top is very nearly top of its class and may even be in a class by itself -- it is the only 100% merino wool midweight top that is completely sourced in New Zealand and is not knitted or otherwise manufactured in Asia (that I know of). This top does not fit skin tight, but it is not intended to. I am 6', 168 lbs and used my measurements to calculate the best size using the Ibex charts. My result was a medium and it fits me perfectly. It is very smooth on skin and absolutely does not itch. The collar grips nicely at the neck, providing good wind protection. It can be worn by itself, although I don't recommend using it for warmth outside of its role as a base layer if you are in significantly cold weather, especially with wind and/or rain. While water does have difficulty penetrating the fabric, it is not waterproof. Wind beyond moderate gusts can pass through and chill your skin. There is a crew neck version of this top, but I chose the zip neck because it is the most versatile across varied temperature ranges and allows for ventilation as needed. I said earlier that it was "nearly" top of it's class, because it does have one minor flaw. This top does not have gusseted underarms, which means the entire top raises when you raise your arms. The length is ample enough to tuck in and remain secure even with your arms fully extended above your head, and the sleeves do hug your forearm area to resist retreating from your wrists, but it is something to consider if this is a critical issue for you (if you wear gloves that only come to your wrist you may experience a gap between the cuff and the glove in this situation). For me, the benefits of the garment make this only a minor pet peeve. Overall, this top is an amazing purchase and I already intend to get more. Ibex is a solid investment that is well worth the money.
Wear it Everywhere
I've been wanting to buy an Ibex shirt for quite some time, but couldn't decide on which one. I finally decided on this one and could not be happier with the decision! This is the perfect weight to wear year round, either as a layer in the winter, or on it's own in warmer weather. I would probably be sized as a medium (5'8", 155 lbs.), however I felt it was a little small in the chest. I didn't want the tight fit, so I went with a large and it's perfect! The length of the medium and large, including the sleeve length seemed fairly similar. The main difference appeared to be in the chest.
