Nice, all-around jacket
A well made, comfortable jacket from Mammut. In colder climates, that light insulation layer is really nice. Waterproof construction is handy for long hauls out in the snow or slushy stuff or even steady rain. This is not a warm weather/softshell type piece, nor is it for the coldest or harshest conditions, but it does all the stuff in the middle very well. Pockets are well placed and seems very weather proof and warm for its weight. A little hardier on the outside than your midlayer puffies and such, which is nice. I use it as my winter jacket, though it's not warm enough on its own when it gets really cold, down into single digits or negatives, say. But it is sized well and allows for easy layering..fits just slightly bigger than other Mammut larges I've had, so definitely made to be your outer piece. Materials and workmanship are top-notch. One thing to note, on many descriptions of the piece it mentions 'internal hand gaiters.' Not true, as these have relatively comfy velcro adjustable cuffs, but there is no internal wrist gaiter. Other winter/snow jackets from Mammut have those, but this piece does not. I kind of like internal gaiters for that extra seal, especially in snow stuff, so it was a bit of a let down there, but just sort of a personal preference. Overall a nice, well made, versatile jacket..especially perfect for areas with milder to middling level winters. I live in MT where winters are a bit colder and I still like it; blocks our cold wind well, and insulation is just enough. I don't know that I can see this being a really active winter jacket (say skate skiing or hard snowshoe exertion, etc.), it doesn't seem quite right for that. More a comfy downhill ski or just out and about winter jacket. Packs decently small so maybe a good one to throw over an active midlayer back at camp, or a purdy piece when heading out on the deck at the pub for a nip of air.
