Mountain Hardwear Men's Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket

If you stop and think about it, a dependable climbing jacket is as essential as a reliable mountaineering rope. A four-season mountaineering shelter can save you from the elements and a -40F rated sleeping bag can provide adequate warmth, but it's your jacket that's going to protect and insulate you all the way back to civilization, which is why this 650-fill down Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket is such an essential fit for expeditions and extended climbs. It offers waterproof/breathable performance in the form of a special Conduit SL laminate that facilitates vapor transfer without sacrificing body heat. You'll find reinforcement fabric along all key abrasion areas of the garment and plenty of internal and external pockets for gear.

  • Nylon ripstop and taslan shell with a waterproof breathable Conduit™ SL laminate
  • 650-fill down insulation in a baffle construction

Perfect Warm Jacket
Last year I made the mistake of not bringing a good jacket on my hunting trip. As I sat there in 20 degree temp waiting for the sun to come up, my body continued to loose heat. The first shots started going off and the adrenaline started to flow. After a while the adrenaline went away but I remained cold and I found myself shivering quite badly. I had been sitting in sub freezing temps for three hours now and I was miserable. I doubt I would have placed a good shot as badly as I was shivering. As soon as I came home from that trip I began the search for a new jacket and found the Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket. I got one from altrec because they had the size/color I wanted and had it for a good price. I was eager to put it to the test on this years hunting trip. Opening day, 4:30 AM, .18 degrees and windy. Perfect. I had stuffed the jacket into the stuff sack (which is a very small & light package) and placed it in my hunting pack along with the other essentials. After a 2 mile hike to my stand and changing into some dry clothes, I donned the new jacket and sat down to wait. I sat there hunkered down in the wind and 20 degree temps for over three hours and never once felt uncomfortable. I had not even put on the extra layer of thermal under garments I had in my pack. This jacket is perfect. It compresses down into an incredibly tight package and weights nothing compared to a comparable non-down jacket. Its wind proof and the lined pockets are fantastic. Best purchase I made all year!!

Excellent Cold Weather Jacket
I was looking for a cold weather jacket that was great quality, very warm and easy to pack. This jacket met all those criteria. It comes with a stuff sack which this jacket (I did not think would fit into it) actually did. It is compact and will pack nicely in my backpack. I have to agree with the only flaw in design I could come up with and that is: if you are long waisted, this jacket will appear short. For me, I am slightly long waisted and it just covers up my belt on my waist. If you like the ability to reach your pockets and not have to lift or open your jacket, then this is not a negative issue. Overall, I am very pleased and love this jacket!!!

Excellent jacket
I actually bought this jacket at the height of summer, so a proper test of its capabilities has yet to take place. I live in Northern Colorado, so a warm, water-resistant jacket is a must in the depths of winter. Mountain Hardwear is a brand that I've come to trust over the years, and judging by putting it on, I'd say this one will be no exception.
