The North Face Men's Elysium Down Jacket

Warmth-to-weight ratios are almost as critical as your food supply in cold, high alpine weather conditions and that's why climbers and mountaineers like this Men's Elysium Jacket from The North Face. Recently The North Face updated their Elysium Jackets but kept the emphasis on insulating performance and minimal weight. This highly compressible jacket stows easily in a corner of your climbing pack or travel duffle. The former Napoleon chest pocket found on older Elysium Jackets for men was relocated to the left bicep, giving you great accessibility to small essentials while you're wearing a pack or full harness. Sometimes the fabric on other cheap down or synthetic puffy jackets will run, fray or tear, but the Elysium Jacket has a durable ripstop nylon exterior that holds up well beneath pack straps and most abrasive surfaces. Depending on how you size your Elysium Jacket, you should have no problem layering this outerwear over a fleece midweight pullover or other clothing with moderate insulating qualities. It also fits well beneath most mountaineering shells.

  • Fabric: 20D 36 g/m², 1.06 oz/yd² 100% nylon ripstop treated with a DWR finish
  • Insulation: 700 fill goose down insulation
  • Zippered handwarmer pockets
  • Bound cuffs
  • Hideaway cinch cord
  • Center back length: 28 in
  • Weight: 21.16 oz, 600 g

This Jacket is very light yet very warm. My 8 year old son loves it although it way too big for him

great performing gift
My son asked for this for Christmas. He didn't have much on his list, so despite the price, I went for it. I made the order by phone, fabulous help on the phone, and the jacket arrived practically overnight. The fit was perfect - he's slight, but tall 6' so the medium allowed room for a sweater underneath. The feel of the jacket is marvelous - silky, and very, very light despite it's 700 fill power. Also important, it looks good, not too puffy, more form fitting, attractive. He went out for a one day excursion (32* and windy) and came back saying he was hot. He rides his bike to work every day, and needed real warmth for the cold and wind. This is perfect. It hasn't rained yet, so can't yet judge its performance in rain. I'll send an update after that. He finds it the best of the jackets he's had because of it's light weight, yet ability to keep really warm, and it only helps that it's good looking, too.

An excellent down jacket if you want a very light weight shell and more warmth than the super light down sweaters. When choosing a jacket for warmth, check fill power, but also check total weight and then consider where the weight is coming from - the shell or lots of down stuffed in it. It's tricky online when you can't feel the jacket. Weight and shell material are your only clues.
