Thermarest ToughSkin Sleeping Pad

Not all camps are made on lush meadow grass, that's why Thermarest designed the Toughskin Mattress. Toughskin is a puncture resistant bottom consisting of closed-cell foam laminated to the air-holding open cell foam above. Sharp objects may penetrate the outer fabric but the closed-cell foam is thick enough that the chance of a puncture is remote. It's a great choice for use in places where thorny debris is common, sleeping out on abrasive rock slabs, or just making sure that your mattress holds up during a lengthy expedition. The Thermarest Toughskin Mattress is field repairable, even in the unlikely event that it does puncture. It also offers an R-value of 3.5 when deflated, which is in the same range as the fully inflated Thermarest ProLite 4 mattress series.

  • Materials: 150 denier ripstop polyester and 150 denier low-slip polyester
  • Low-slip polyester top helps you to stay on the mattress when sleeping on low-angled slopes
  • Toughskin™ puncture resistant bottom places a layer of closed-cell foam between the outer material and the air-holding open–cell foam
  • Thickness: 1.5 in. (3.8 cm)
  • R-value: 5.2 (measure of insulating ability. The higher the value, the warmer the mattress)
  • Dimensions: 20 x 51 in. (51 x 130 cm) in small, 20 x 72 in. (51 x 183 cm) in regular
  • Rolled dimensions:21 x 4.3 in. (53 x 11 cm) in small, 21 x 5.4 in. (53 x 13 cm) in regular
  • Weight: 1 lb. 10 oz. (750 g) in small, 2 lbs. 8 oz. (1140 g) in regular

Reviews - Thermarest ToughSkin Sleeping Pad

Great Choice for bigger guys
After reviewing all the pads out on the market, and reading others reviews, I decided on a thermarest. The key problems other reviewers cited were weight, warmth, deflation, cost and lack of comfort. This is the one pad on the market that best resolves comfort, a very good R value of 5.2 on warmth and protection from punctures. It is a little heavier and pricey - but well worth it IMO. Since I am well over 6 foot and 220 pounds and using a down bag, I need a stronger pad. Down compresses to nothing, and if I sit up on the pad, all my weight is on one spot. This pad is pricey, but well worth the trouble considering my $700 marmot CWM down bag it protects.

Great pad!
Not quite my bed, but a vast improvement over my last pad. A welcome addition to my campsite.

Very comfortable
much better than my old Cablela's pad. I love to backpack but hate waking up 15 times during the middle of the night because of a sore back. This helps.
