Aspen-Based Wildernet.com Acquires Peakware.com

Wildernet.com and Peakware.com offer the most comprehensive Web sites for backcountry, mountaineering information

ASPEN, CO - Jan. 4, 2000 - Interactive Outdoors, Inc., owner of Wildernet.com, has acquired Peakware.com, allowing outdoor enthusiasts to plan their next mountain adventure with more ease and information than ever before, Bob Rankin, chief executive officer, announced Monday.

Wildernet.com is an online outdoor recreation guide providing detailed descriptions of recreation facilities such as trails, jeep roads, campgrounds, national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, scenic byways, historic sites and other resources throughout the United States. In Colorado alone, Wildernet.com showcases more than 900 hikes and 400 campgrounds. Wildernet.com is produced and owned by Interactive Outdoors, Inc., a privately-held Web publishing company based in Aspen, Colo.

Peakware.com is the most comprehensive guide to mountains on the Web. Visitors may learn about over 750 mountains worldwide using a variety of different search tools. Profiles of each mountain are presented, including height, location, geographical coordinates, historical information, climbing route data, volcanic activity information, and a detailed description of the peak. What really distinguishes Peakware.com, however, is that its visitors play an important part in developing its content. Each day climbers contribute new stories about their mountain adventures on a particular peak, and share current information about route conditions. Visitors can also publish their own mountain photos, add their own peaks, and purchase mountain-related books and outdoor equipment.

"With its vast number of peaks and emphasis on community, Peakware.com appeals to both the seasoned mountaineer and the general mountain enthusiast," said Neal Beidleman, an experienced high altitude mountaineer, Mount Everest summit veteran, and Interactive Outdoors advisory board member from Aspen. "I use the site to find information and resources for not only the world's most popular mountains such as Everest, Denali, and Rainier but also for those lesser-known mountains where information is hard to come by."

"At Peakware.com, users are able to network with each other, exploring the world and the high country together," explained Terry Thompson, founder of the Peakware site. "This is a site built and maintained by users. I'm thrilled to be able to assist with the transition of Peakware.com and watch its content grow from its new headquarters in the heart of the Rocky Mountains."

Thompson has been named to the Interactive Outdoors Advisory Board.

"With a growing community of climbers helping to create the site, Peakware.com will better enable us to provide users with as much information as possible about recreational opportunities in the mountains of the United States and across the globe," Rankin said.
