Report: The twin lakes themselves, and the views from the vantage point of nearly 12,000 at the lakes, are all fantastic. The falls between the two lakes are lovely, as are the falls on route to the lakes. I do not fish, but good-sized fish were jumping in the lower lake.
Conditions: The trail is quite steep in some parts, while there are also long, nearly-level strolls in the middle. The 4x4 route after the fork where you will encounter a new, clearly-written "Pearl Pass Road" sign gets a little more technical - definitely 4-low terrain. I do not recommend this road for beginner off-roaders or for anyone squeamish in 4-low or passing/yielding on very narrow roads with few turn-outs. Otherwise, enjoy yourself and use common off-road sense.
Water Availability: We hiked this trail July 6, 2003, and there was plenty of water for backpackers and dogs.
Recommended Clothing: Two stream crossings, one of them rather deep (mid-calf this season) suggest you may want to carry sandals to change into to spare your boots. Otherwise, be prepared to hike with wet feet.
Suggested Accessories: A hiking stick would certainly be nice, especially on the steeps at the beginning of the trail and nearing the lakes.
