General Description

The Baldy Lake Trail follows the ridge between the West Fork and Hicks Creek, crosses the headwaters of the West Fork and then ascends to Baldy Lake. Fishing varies from day to day at Baldy Lake. A loop is possible by climbing a short section of trail to the top of the Continental Divide above the lake. Turn left (east) and follow the Summit Trail #486 to its junction with the Longbranch Trail #489. Follow the Longbranch Trail down to the point of beginning.

Directions from Gunnison: Take Hwy 50 to Longbranch road (#780) which is about 1/2 miles west of Sargents. On Rd 780 go to the Longbranch Ranger Station (not manned), bear left at the corral, and bear right at the next fork. A sign at the next road fork marks the beginning of the trail. Take the West Fork of Longbranch Creek.

Report: Beautiful Scenery and a nice mellow hike. The open park near the trail head along with the Vietnam memorial was inspiring.
Conditions: Elevation gains were mild.
Water Availability: a 7 mile streach without water, so prepare for this. Razor creek was just a trickle so plan on rehydrating at Baldy Lake.
Suggested Accessories: Up until seeing the fishing reports, I would have swore that there wasn't any fish in Baldy Lake. Not a bite and I didn't even see one fish jump...with bugs all over the lake. Tried flies, lures, spinners and even live bate. I hope you have better luck!
