General Description

Cataract Gulch Trailhead, located on State Road 30 west of Lake San Cristobal, provides access to Cataract Lake. This alpine lake lies three and a half miles south of State Road 30 in Cataract Gulch and along Cataract Gulch Trail. Cataract Lake lies just below the Continental Divide. Fishing success varies from year to year because of its elevation. Brook trout are the predominant species in this lake.

Directions from Lake City: Drive south on Highway 149 two miles and turn right on the Cinnamon Pass Road toward Lake San Cristobal. Continue on the Cinnamon Pass Road to the Sherman townsite fork, taking the left fork to Sherman. The trailhead to Cataract Lake is approximately one half mile after the bridge and it is marked by a sign. Cataract Lake is a three and a half mile strenuous hike from the trailhead.
