In the future, the trail will be relocated around private property. Presently, you need to ask permission to cross the private property. The trail goes through all types of terrain as it passes through the low country to the high country toward Mesa Mountain (12,944 feet in elevation). The trail is very popular during the big game hunting seasons and is used by horsemen, ATVs, motorcycles and foot traffic. If using a motorized vehicle, please check with the Divide/Del Norte Ranger District for access problems or other information.

Directions from Del Norte, Colorado: Travel north from Del Norte and turn left on County Road 33 and follow it to Forest Development Road 670. Turn left and continue to the trailhead.

Normally Open: Late June-Early July through Early September .

Animal Lovers Tour Four-Wheel Drive Road - This tour is designed to provide wildlife viewing opportunities. The best time for animal viewing is early morning or late evening.

La Garita - Phoenix Park-Halfmoon Pass Trail - Excellent scenery, a bounty of wildflowers and a good opportunity to see elk exist along this trail. Large open alpine meadows with scattered patches of old growth spruce/fir timber are a common part of the landscape.
