General Description

The first part of the trail is the same as the Big Meadows Campground. The trail to the falls leaves from the upper campground loop and is marked by a wooden sign. Return by the same route.

Directions from Del Norte, Colorado: Take Highway 160 west 29 miles (46.7 km) to the Big Meadows road. Trailhead is at the junction of Highway 160 and Big Meadows Road. Trailhead is indicated by cross country skier symbol.

Big Buck Basin - This area offers some excellent opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.

Big Meadows Campground - Attractions include fishing at Big Meadows Reservoir and in the South Fork of the Rio Grande, access to the Weminuche Wilderness via the Archuleta Creek Trail 839, visiting Cascade Falls.

Big Meadows Cross-Country - Parking is available at the Big Meadows turnoff on U.S. Highway 160.

Big Meadows Reservoir - Rainbow trout, brook trout and some native cutthroat trout are in the reservoir. There is ample parking and turn around space and a paved boat ramp at the north end. Boating is suitable for rafts to small motor boats.

Columbine Picnic Ground - Columbine Picnic Area is located alongside U.S. Highway 160, 26 miles west of Del Norte and 9 miles west of South Fork.

Lake Fork Rest Area - The Lake Fork Rest Area is 27 miles west of Del Norte and 9 miles west of South Fork alongside U.S. Highway 160.
