General Description

The Grays Peak Trail is located west of Georgetown and south of Bakersville. A person can climb Grays and Torreys Peaks, two 14,000 foot peaks, in one day. These are two of the easiest fourteeners to climb. You also get some beautiful views of both sides of the Continental Divide. The trail is heavily used, especially on weekends.

It is best to start early and get down from the peaks before the afternoon thunderstorms start for the day. Snow stays in this area very late into spring. The trails aren't normally clear of snow until the end of June.

Directions from Idaho Springs: Follow I-70 west to Exit 221. Travel south up Stevens Gulch for 4 miles to the trailhead.

Report: Not to hard the first 1.5 miles. After you will quickly notice the elevation gain. Amazing views and a perfect first time 14er.
Conditions: We went today May 12. Lots of snow about a foot and a half to be exact. We left from the trail head about 6:30 am and reached the summit around 11 but not with out the weather blessed us with snow our way down.
Water Availability: There are 2 streams close to the trail head but you will be fine with about 80 oz or so.
Recommended Clothing: Forgot sunscreen ( big mistake) 4 thin layers and a wind proof shell and regular hiking boots and a change of socks.
Suggested Accessories: Forgot my gators and could have used cramponsvery thankful for goretex gloves for the several slides on the way down. ( not a bad idea to carry a snowboard or skis for the way down. )
