General Description

Mt. Sherman's elevation is 14,036 it is located between Fairplay and Leadville. It's considered one of the easiest of the Colorado Fourteeners to climb. There are two trailheads that provide access to Mt. Sherman Trail: Fourmile Creek Trailhead and Iowa Gulch Trailhead. Both of these are above 11,000 feet in elevation which makes the summit of Mt. Sherman relatively easy to attain.

Directions from Fairplay: From Fairplay, drive south on U.S. 285 one mile to the Fourmile Creek national forest access road. Turn right (west) and drive eleven miles to Leavick. This is a good place to leave two-wheel drive cars. At Leavick, a jeep road continues west-northwest to the Dauntless Mine. This road takes hikers to the Fourmile Creek Trailhead. Climb west to the low point of the Sherman-Sheridan saddle and then northeast up the southwest ridge.

Directions from Leadville: From the traffic lights in Leadville, take Harrison Avenue south to Monroe Street (first left past Diamond Shamrock) to Toledo, also known as County Road 2. County Road 2B will veer to the left from County Road 2 and stops at the Continental Chief Mine. (Be aware that Mt. Sherman and the east side of Gemini peak are private property.) Climb east to the saddle between Gemini and Sherman Peaks, and then walk south on the north ridge.

Seasonal Information:
Normally Accessible: May through September (NOTE: Snow may obstruct the trail at high elevations.) .
