General Description

South Halfmoon Road (Forest Road #110.3A) begins on the Halfmoon Road 2 miles west of the Mt. Massive trailhead and ends at the Iron Mike Mine. The road is a very rough four-wheel drive road with a few difficult stream crossings. Experienced four-wheel drivers only should attempt this. The road climbs into a large open alpine basin where the mine is located.

Directions from Leadville: Drive 3 miles southwest from Leadville on Highway 24. Make a right on to Highway 300 toward the Leadville National Fish Hatchery. Drive approximately 1 mile on Highway 300 to State Highway 11, which eventually turns into Forest Road 110, Halfmoon Road. Drive 9.1 miles west on Halfmoon Road. The South Halfmoon Road will be on the left side of the road 2 miles passed the Mt. Massive/Mt. Elbert Trailhead.

Normally Accessible: May through October (NOTE: Snow and Mud may obstruct the road during the Spring, Fall and Winter months.) .

Halfmoon Road - Halfmoon Road begins on Fish Hatchery Road (#300) and continue to the Champion Mine. The first 7 miles are accessible to 2 WD vehicles.

Mt. Elbert - Mt. Elbert at 14,433 ft elevation is the highest point in Colorado. It is the second highest mountain in the adjacent 48 states.

Mt. Massive - Mount Massive is the second highest peak in Colorado and is appropriately named, with seven summits over 14,000 feet. Elevation of the highest peak is 14,421 feet.

North Halfmoon Trail - This trail leads the hiker to a high alpine lake. North Halfmoon Lakes are located almost 3 miles from the trailhead on Halfmoon Road.
