General Description

The Garfield Campground is wooded with Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. All 11 sites provide some shade. Every site at Garfield Campground is filled first come first served. Trailers up to 30 feet and medium sized RVs are accepted. Services available are as follows: water, one vault toilet, tables, fire grates and trash disposal. No hookups are available.

Fishing opportunities at Garfield Campground include stream fishing for brook trout in the South Arkansas River. Waterdog Lakes can be accessed by hiking, and Boss Lake is accessible by four-wheel drive. Hunt Lake is located with in 1/2 mile of Boss Lake and is accessed by for only. All of the above mentioned lakes offer excellent fishing opportunities. Hiking opportunities include the Continental Divide Trail, Colorado Trail, Hunt Lake Trail, Waterdog Lakes Trail and Hancock Lake Trail. Four-wheel drive roads in the area include Boss Lake Road, Middle Fork Road, Taylor Mountain Road, Fooses Creek Road and Cree Creek Road.

Directions from Poncha Springs: Travel approximately 12 miles west on Highway 50 from Poncha Springs. The campground is located 1/2 mile east of the town of Monarch. The entrance is on the left (south) side of the road.

Fooses Creek Trailhead - Fooses Creek Trailhead is located 7.25 miles southwest of Poncha Springs. This site provides access to segment 15 of the Colorado Trail.

Hancock Lake Trail - Hancock Lake Trail is an old path used by miners to carry supplies by mule to the mining camps. It connects with Forest Developed Road 230 at the Middle Fork of the south Arkansas River.
