General Description

Located 40 miles southwest of Springfield on the shores of Carrizo Creek this area promises a day full of varied activities. An easy 1/2 mile loop trail takes you along the creek and back to the picnic area. Evidence of ancient peoples that traveled through and lived in the region may be found along the rock canyon walls along the trail. Most of the rock art in the area portrays animals that live in the grassland. Just like the creators of the rock art visitors may see a variety of wildlife, especially birds, in the morning or immediately before sunset.

The elevation of the picnic area is 4,720 feet. The life zone at this elevation is great basin desert and shortgrass prairie with some cottonwood and juniper trees. Facilities include two covered picnic tables with grills, three picnic tables in the canyon bottom and a vault toilet. Drinking water is not available at this site.
