General Description

Breakneck Pass (Forest Developed Road 175) is an access point to Sheep Park and Twelvemile Creek areas southwest of Sheep Ridge. The road was originally developed by miners to access the valley below the Mosquito Range. Round Hill (11,243') lies west of the intersection of Weston Pass Road and Breakneck Pass Road. The road follows its northern flanks as it climbs to the pass. As the road reaches the pass it intersects with Round Hill Road, which is gated on the southern side of Round Hill. On the western side of the pass Breakneck Road leads into the Sheep Creek drainage. The pass is usually open mid-May to mid-October, weather dependent.

Directions from Fairplay: From Fairplay drive south on Highway 285 for 4.4 miles. Turn right on County Road 5 and begin traveling west. Breakneck Pass can be reached by traveling on Forest Road 175. The road is accessible for high clearance vehicles and one steep section of road requires four-wheel drive.

Seasonal Information:
Normally Open: Mid-May through Mid-October .

Report: To me Breakneck pass road is the begining of the adventure. Once on top of the pass the choices begin. To the right you can do a 15 mi. loop with Browns Pass which is a moderate ride with a great downhill on Browns Pass. Or keep going a climb Sheep Mtn at 13.2K ft. Then get a 3000ft drop on a little know singletrack, this is a strenuous ride for experts. Go straight and you can take the Sheep Crk and Watrous Gulch Trail single tracks for more then 15 miles of singletrack, this ride is my 12 year old kids favorite. Or go to 12 mile lake. Endless possibilities here. Plus you can extend your trip with the Rough and Tumbling creek and Salt Creek trails which are described in the horseback riding section of this site. And yes, they are open to Mtn Biking since these trails are outside of the Wilderness. Go to http://www.geocities.com/donelsborg for more info.
Conditions: Breckneck Pass has a short steep section of rocky 4x4 road. Nice and shaddy. Snow can linger in here. Ridgetop is flat for miles to the right. Watch out for the summer lightning storms.
Water Availability: Camelback + water bottle works. Sheep creek in the meadow runs until late summer. 12 mile lake at the very end of the fire road has year round water. There is also water on the Sheep Creek/Watrous Gulch Trail. This is all wild area, bring your filter if your out for the day.

Difficulty: Easy

Report: This is a little known and fairly scenic track. There are a couple of lovely stands of Aspens and an easy climb. There are a couple of reasonable bush camping spots. Bushducks
