General Description

This trail passes through a rich forest of spruce-fir and occasional lush meadows. The area is leased for stock grazing and the trail has evidence of their occasional use. The forest supports a variety of large and small mammals (bear, elk, marmot), as well as numerous species of birds.

Some confusion as to the location of the trail could arise by the hiker, horseback or bike rider after entering the meadows. Watch for meadow post markers at these points.

Directions from Dolores, Colorado: Take Colorado State Hwy 145 north to Forest Service Road #535. Take #535 (Dunton Road) north to Forest Service Road #686 (Stoner Mesa Road). Follow #686 east approximately 6.5 miles to Twin Spring which is located beyond the sign for the Stoner Mesa. Park and walk down the meadow. The Spring Creek Trail which intersects the Stoner Creek Trail has a sign to the west (left, when looking down the meadow).

Seasonal Information:
Normally Accessible: Summer through Fall .
