General Description

Snowslide Campground sits 5 miles up La Plata Canyon from Highway 160. It is shaded by a mixture of spruce, fir, aspen, and cottonwood. Expect cool nights during the summer at this elevation of almost 9,000 feet. La Plata Canyon and its campgrounds are heavily used during the camping season.

Directions from Durango, Colorado: Travel west 11 miles on U.S. Highway 160, then go north 5 miles on County Road 124 (La Plata Canyon) to campground entrances on both sides of the road.

Highline Loop National Recreation Trail - Several trails traverse the high country, including the Highline Loop National Recreational Trail. The trail travels 17.0 miles through mountain parks, aspen groves, and spruce/fir forest, and along alpine ridge tops above timberline.

Kennebec Pass-Junction Creek Road Trail - This is a popular mountain bike loop near Durango which starting at Mayday, makes for a difficult workout. Alternatively, one can begin at Kennebec Pass which makes a long downhill run with most of the route on gravel road.
