General Description

Pine River Campground and Trailhead are located four miles beyond Middle Mountain Campground. This area is often used as a temporary base camp and parking area for hikers and backpackers. There is no potable water. All six campsites have outstanding views up the Pine River Valley.

Private land adjoins the campground, and there is no public access to the nearby river. Although RVs easily fit in the parking area, the campsites accommodate only tents or small RVs.

Directions from Bayfield, Colorado: Travel 22 miles north on County Road 501 to the turnoff for Middle Mountain Campground. Continue right on Forest Road 602 for 5 miles to the campground entrance.

Emerald Lake - The lake is the third largest natural lake in Colorado and only accessible by foot and horseback. The unique Cutthroat Rainbow Trout hybrid exists in the lake which is one of the few self-sustaining rainbow populations found in Colorado.

Old Timers Campground - Old Timers Campground sits on the east shore of Vallecito Reservoir. Eleven well-shaded sites provide a cool, intimate setting on a gentle hillside near the water, with an adjacent gravel boat ramp.
