General Description

Parts of this trail are hard to follow. Most of the trail is located above timberline, so navigation with a compass is best. The alpine meadows are full of blooming wildflowers in late July and in August. Water in the area is abundant, but water should be purified to prevent Giardia contamination. As with all high altitude areas, storms can move in rapidly bringing severe lightning and rain, snow and hail. Plan accordingly and please tread lightly.

Directions from Durango, Colorado: Access #1: Access the lower end of this trail via Kendall Mountain Road from Silverton. Follow U.S. Highway 550 from Durango to Silverton and turn onto Green Street in Silverton. Follow Green Street to 14th Street. Turn on 14th Street and follow it east across the bridge. This road is the Kendall Mountain Road. About 2 1/2 miles up the road, it splits, one road heads to Kendall Peak, the other goes to Deer Park. Take Deer Park Road (the right fork). The trailhead is approximately 1 mile from this fork. Limited parking is available and a four-wheel-drive with clearance is recommended.Access #2: This trail can be accessed from the Highland Mary Lakes Trail and from the Continental Divide Trail.

Seasonal Information:
Normally Accessible: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend .
