Molas Pass Area
This trail definitely goes down which means coming back up is work. Luckily, you may opt to take the Elk Creek Trail (Forest Development Trail 503) or you can catch the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge train at Elk Creek. The first part of the trail gently descends through some pretty meadows next to the creek. Here you will fine excellent views of the Grenadiers and Needles. The trail then begins to drop sharply down the 1,500 foot descent to the Animas River.

Directions from Durango, Colorado: Drive 46 miles north of Durango on U.S. Highway 550. About 1 mile north of Molas Pass, turn east into the Molas Lake access road. There is plenty of parking available next to the highway and at the trailhead. The trail leads off from the southwestern side of the lake.

Seasonal Information:
Normally Accessible: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend .
