General Description

This trail provides a variety of sights in a fairly short distance, including beautiful views of La Plata through the aspen trees. The meadows near the top offer nice campsites and food for horses with easy access to the creek. The trail is steep in spots as it winds through the various transitional zones.

Directions from Durango, Colorado: Take U.S. Highway 550 north from Durango 10 miles to Hermosa. Turn west on County Road 201 and keep to the right. This road will become Forest Development Road 576. Follow this road for approximately 3 miles. The trailhead is on the north side of the road and adequate parking is available.

Report: Easy hike. Rarely used - I think I've seen maybe 5 other people during my 4-5 hikes there. Beware of people on dirt bikes. There is a creepy place in an aspen grove where the trees are in a circle. I went there with a friend and she was creeped out also, so it isn't just me. I got chased by a cow once.
Conditions: Drier than many.
Water Availability: I don't recall seeing any water in any of the draws.
Recommended Clothing: Carry rain gear.

Dutch Creek Trail - This trail follows a 10,000 foot ridge line for the first few miles which give a panoramic view of the La Platas and Needle Mountains.
