General Description

This trail is only a short drive from Durango and is usually free of snow by mid to late May. A wide variety of tree species, including pinion, aspen Gambel's oak, ponderosa pine, juniper, fir and spruce can be seen as you pass through the different vegetative zones. The red and white cliffs which follow the trail are the nesting ground for many species of birds. The Hermosa valley and La Plata mountains provide many scenic opportunities along the way. Haflin Creek is not always a reliable source of water.

Directions from Durango, Colorado: The trail leads up the eastern side of the valley approximately 7 miles north of Durango on East Animas Road (County Road 250). Limited parking is available at the trailhead.
