General Description

From the north end, the "W" Mountain Trail begins along the Island Park Trail. The hiker or rider starts at an elevation of over 11,500 feet in a southerly direction across the rolling tundra. Trappers, Shingle, Derby, and Turret Peaks are in view on the first section of trail. The trail continues southeast across "W" Mountain, dropping from the plateau to either FDR 616 at Big Spring or FDR 611 in the Red Dirt Creek drainage. The trail can be accessed from the east side of the Flat Tops on the Eagle Ranger District from either of the above two points.

Directions from Meeker: "W" Mountain Trail is located 51 miles east of Meeker. Take State Highway 13 east out of Meeker for one mile; turn right on County Road 8 for 39 miles to the Trappers Lake Road turn right for 10 miles to the Trappers Lake Outlet Trailhead. From the Outlet Trailhead you head south on the Carhart Trail around the east side of Trappers Lake for 2 miles to Trappers Lake Trail then 3 miles to the Island Lakes Trail then take the Island Lakes Trail 2 miles to the "W" Mountain Trail.

Carhart Trail - The Carhart Trail circles Trappers Lake close to the shore on the east and north sides providing fishing access.

Island Lake Trail (west end) - The Island Lake Trail begins along Trappers Lake Trail, heads generally east to the Island Lake basin and eventually to Stump Park, on the east end of the Flat Tops.

Trappers Lake Trail - This trail leads from south of Trappers Lake, up Fraser Creek and up onto the Flat Tops Plateau. It continues across the Flat Tops Wilderness to Indian Camp Pass, north of Deep Lake.
