Satellite and Topo Map

General Description

The trail starts 2 miles up the Avalanche Creek Trail. It is a steep trail with some flowers near the top of the ridge and great views of Avalanche Creek and the Roaring Fork Valley. This trail is used primarily by horses during the fall hunting season. The trail reaches a pass on the ridge and from here you can continue on to the Williams Lake trail, Hardscrabble Lake and the Capital Creek Trailhead.

Be aware that the trail as shown on topo maps is clearly not accurate as it approaches the pass. Satellite imagery does not show a trail in this area.

Directions from Carbondale: From Carbondale travel south on Hwy. 133. Go 12.5 miles to Avalanche Creek. Turn left and proceed 3 miles to Avalanche Creek Trailhead after the campground. Hike 2 miles up the Avalanche Creek Trail, the Hell Roaring Trail branches off to the left just before the bridge.

Seasonal Information:
Normally Accessible: June through October (NOTE: This trail is used most in the Late Fall for access to hunting grounds.) .

Report: Very tough trail! The climb seems to never end. The hardest part was the return. Really pounds your knees and feet. The bugs were horrible. Forgot bug spray and could'nt stop long or would be eaten alive. The trail peters out before climbing last part to top.Could'nt find it so made way up on own.Thought I saw the trail as I climbed out and tried to go down it on return only to lose it again. Was great to have lunch on top.Found an old cowboy camp up there so I guess I was'nt the only one who thought so. It was the only place there was relief from the bugs. One of the toughest days on a trail I ever had.
Conditions: Trail was rocky with a lot of sun up high.Still pockets of snow which coverd trail in places. Bugs were horrible.Very steep! Harder coming down than going up.
Water Availability: Took 2.5 liters and it was'nt enough. Dug some fresh snow out of an avalanch to fill my bladder.Plenty of water available if you have a pump.Still a lot of snow right now.
Recommended Clothing: Wore shorts and long sleeves until afternoon, then went to short sleeves.Take sunscreen.
Suggested Accessories: Alot of bear sign .I would suggest some pepper spray.Hiking stick would be useful.
