The trail starts 2 miles up the Avalanche Creek Trail. It is a steep
trail with some flowers near the top of the ridge and great views of
Avalanche Creek and the Roaring Fork Valley. This trail is used
primarily by horses during the fall hunting season. The trail
reaches a pass on the ridge and from here you can continue on to
Lake trail, Hardscrabble Lake and the Capital Creek Trailhead.
Be aware that the trail as shown on topo maps is clearly not
as it approaches the pass. Satellite imagery does not show a trail in
Directions from Carbondale: From Carbondale travel south on Hwy. 133. Go 12.5 miles to Avalanche Creek. Turn left and proceed 3 miles to Avalanche Creek Trailhead after the campground. Hike 2 miles up the Avalanche Creek Trail, the Hell Roaring Trail branches off to the left just before the bridge.
