General Description

Sitting at an elevation of 3,900 feet, Sand Flat Campground can be located 27 miles east of Placerville. In addition to offering camping facilities, the site provides close access for fishing and swimming on the South Fork of the American River.

On the South Fork of the American River, the game species present are rainbow and brown trout. Catchable rainbow trout are stocked by California Department of Fish and Game weekly at Riverton to supplement the wild trout production from opening day through July. For the river section east of Highway 49 the season is the last Saturday in April to November 15th. West of Highway 49 all year.

On site facilities: 29 camping units (1 double unit), drinking water, picnic tables and vault toilets. There is a grocery store, gas station and restaurant within five miles of the area.

Directions from Placerville: Take Highway 50 east for 28 miles. The site is located on the South Fork of the American River.
