A 5-mile hike of moderate difficulty. The trail starts in the oak woodlands of the American Canyon Campground. It gradually climbs 1,700 feet along brush-covered mountain slopes. Passing through scattered groves of oak and pine, it ends in the shady Pine Springs trail camp. Views of the surrounding La Panza mountains and Carrizo Plains are breathtaking.
Note: Road to American Canyon open only 6 weeks during general deer rifle season. (2nd Saturday in August through 3rd Sunday in September).
Directions from Santa Margarita: Travel Southeast on Pozo Road for about 18 miles to the junction with Forest Road 29S01. Turn right (east) and drive two miles and turn southeast onto FS 30S02.
