General Description

Crooked Lakes is located approximately 6 miles north of Bear Valley Picnic Ground. This lake is overpopulate with stunted bullhead catfish. No trout are known to inhabit these lakes.

Directions from Nevada City: Travel east on Hwy. #20 for approximately 19 miles and turn left onto Primary Forest Route #18. Travel north and turn east at the Lindsey Lake, Freely Lake, Carr Lake sign. Follow the signs to Carr Lake and park. Continue on by foot to Feeley Lake where the trail starts. Follow the Lindsey Lakes Trail to access the trail from the north. The trail will lead to the lakes.

Crooked Lakes Trail - Crooked Lakes Trail is a more difficult 2.25 mile trail at an elevation of 6,880 feet. The trail goes from Island Lake to Penner Lake, one of the most scenic of the Grouse Lakes.

Culbertson Lake - Culbertson Lake is located approximately 6.5 miles north of Bear Valley Picnic Ground. Fingerling rainbows are planted yearly in this large, deep lake. The rainbow population is increasing.

Penner Lake - Penner Lake is located approximately 7 miles north of Bear Valley Picnic Ground. Fingerling rainbows (1,500) are planted every two years.
