General Description

The first part of the Santiam Wagon Road Trail System is the Mountain House to Squaw Creek Road. This section is an easy 3.3 mile trail. Probably the most intact piece of the original wagon road, this segment will provide you with a true sense of early travel. The road parallels the South Santiam River and winds through lush and second-growth forests and crosses several tributaries along the way. Look for the old mill pond now grown in with red alder.

Directions from Sweet Home: The trailhead for this section is located 23.4 miles east of Sweet Home on Hwy. #20, just east of the Mountain House Restaurant.

Santiam Wagon Road Trail - The Santiam Wagon Road Trail System parallels and crosses Hwy. #20 approximately 32 miles east of Sweet Home. The trail is divided into five parts and is mostly an easy trail. Total length is approximately 20 miles .

Sevenmile Hill to Tombstone Pass Trail - The third segment of the Santiam Wagon Road Trail System is the Tombstone Pass to Hackleman Creek Road. This section is an easy 6.5 miles.

Squaw Creek Road to Sevenmile Hill Trail - The second segment of the Santiam Wagon Road Trail is the Squaw Creek Road to Sevenmile Trailhead. This segment was immortalized in stories of the first transcontinental auto race in 1905.

Tombstone Pass to Hackleman Creek Road Trail - The fourth segment of the Santiam Wagon Road Trail System is the Hackleman Creek Road to Fish Lake. This section is an easy 2.2 miles. Fish Lake Guard Station was a major stopover for early travelers on the wagon road.
