Large-Flowered Trillium usher in the wildflower season
|
Follow a quarter-mile trail into a unique "cathedral" of towering pines and hemlock trees. This area survived Wisconsin's logging era and has been preserved in its natural state. Trees range in age from 200 to 400 years old. During early summer you may observe great blue herons nesting high in the tallest pines. This is one of Wisconsin's largest heron rookeries. The site may be visited May through October. Benches are available along the hiking trail. The site is handicapped accessible.
Directions from Lakewood, WI: Travel Hwy. 32 north 1 mile turning southwest (left) onto Archibald Lake Road (FR 2121). Watch for signs on the left side of the road. There is parking for 5 vehicles.
