The Suloia Lake Cabin is located northwest of Sitka on Chichagof Island in the West Chichagof-Takobi Wilderness Area. Spruce and hemlock forested ridges rise to 2600 feet, and there is a small gravel beach at the cabin. The lake is about 2 miles long by 1/2 mile wide, at an elevation of 225 feet. Hiking is limited, but visitors can enjoy the wilderness solitude. This primitive cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, a table, benches, a woodstove for heat, and an outside toilet. It has no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, and food. A skiff with oars is provided for cabin users only; bring personal flotation devices. A 2-10 HP longshaft outboard motor (not provided) enhances use of the skiff. The person holding the reservation must be 18 and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 - September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30. Access by floatplane only. This cabin is in a designated Wilderness area, and access by helicopter is illegal.
Reservations can be made the day of arrival, or up to 180 days in advance. Boil or treat stream water before drinking. Occasionally poor weather can cause delayed arrivals or extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this. Mid-November through late April the cabin may be inaccessible due to frozen lake surface (floatplanes cannot land). Contact the local Forest Service Ranger District office for current information prior to making reservations during these periods. All garbage and food must be packed out.
Directions: Accessible generally late April through mid November. Located 30 air miles northwest of Sitka on Chichagof Island (within West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness Area).
