General Description

16'X16' A-Frame cabin that sleeps 8 people. This cabin was built in 1993 by volunteers from the US Coast Guard Air Station in Sitka and by local volunteers. The cabin is nestled just inside the forest fringe on the north beach of Shelikof Bay. It has a spectacular view of the cresting waves of the outside coast of the Gulf of Alaska and is surrounded by a hemlock and spruce forest adjacent to a sandy beach. The terrain is relatively flat and easy to explore. The cabin is uniquely ATV accessible, with 36 miles of old logging roads for ATV riding and mountain biking. Proximity: 1.5 miles north of Shelikof cabin, along beach. Restrictions: Brown bear frequent the area, cabin not maintained in winter, firewood may be scarce; rain gear and boots recommended. Activities: Hiking, biking, ATV riding, beachcombing, photography, wildlife viewing. Deer, bear, and waterfowl hunting. There are NO discounts for Golden Age/Passports for Alaska Cabin rentals. The person holding the reservation must be 18, and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 -September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30. A-frame cabin is equipped with sleeping loft, wooden bunks, table, benches, woodstove for heat, and an outhouse. It has no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, and food. Cabin is uniquely accessible for all-terrain vehicles, with 36 miles of old logging roads for ATV and mountain biking. Cabin users should be prepared for noise from ATV riders who may use the beach in front of the cabin. Reservations can be made on the day of arrival or up to 180 days in advance. Boil or treat water before drinking. All garbage and food must be packed out. Occasionally poor weather can cause delayed arrivals or extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this.


Accessible year round, weather permitting. Located 20 air miles northwest of Sitka, on the western shore of Kruzof Island. Access by helicopter or boat, 45 minutes from Sitka to Mud Bay on the east side of Kruzof Island, then 7.5 mile hike or ATV ride on old logging roads.
First-time users of this cabin should contact the Sitka Ranger District office at 907-747-4220 for crucial, detailed information on accessing the cabin by trail.
