General Description

The Downstream Campground is located on the east bank of the Missouri River below Garrison Dam.

There are numerous outdoor recreation opportunities located throughout the area, with 5 boat ramps within three miles of the campground. The campground is also adjacent to a large, wooded wildlife management area, a National Fish Hatchery, and a trout pond is located between the campground and Missouri River.

There are two public recreation areas within two miles that have picnic shelters, grills, a swim beach, modern restrooms, vault toilets, sand volleyball courts, playgrounds, horseshoe pits and a basketball court.

The campground consists of 3 modern camp loops with 101 electrical sites and a primitive loop with 17 non-electrical sites. Amenities in the campground area include a dump station, three comfort stations with showers, grills, picnic tables, pay phone, two playgrounds, vault toilets, and paved roads in all campgrounds. There are water spigots located throughout the campground area for filling of water tanks.

Reservations must be made at least 2 days in advance. This campground requires a 2 day minimum stay on weekends. This campground requires a 3 day minimum stay on holiday weekends.

Prices range from $10-$14.

The picnic shelters in the recreation areas can be reserved by calling (701) 654-7411 or write the Corps of Engineers at Box 527, Riverdale, ND 58565.

Only one camping unit per site is permitted, but dependents under age 18 may stay in 1 tent on the same site. There is no doubling up on campsites due to adverse impacts to the campsite. Campsites cannot be reserved and used as parking for extra vehicles.


From Riverdale, take Highway 200 west to dam. One quarter mile after crossing Spillway Bridge, take the Tow Road down the face of the dam. At bottom intersection, turn left and go 1/4 mile East and turn right onto the campground access road. Campground is one mile south of paved road.
