Description
- On the Lolo National Forest, four major rivers and streams offer some of the best fishing in the Rocky Mountains. The topography varies from remote, high alpine lakes to whitewater streams and from heavily forested ridges to smooth rolling meadows. The Rattlesnake National Recreation Area offers many recreational opportunities right on the edge of Missoula.
Recreation - Visitors to the Lolo can enjoy camping, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling and more. Climate - Temperatures and precipitation on the Forest vary with elevation. Summers tend to bring moderate to warm temperatures with clear days. Summer highs are normally in the 70's and 80's with relatively cool to cold nights. Winter brings cold temperatures with ample snow for winter recreation activities. Winter temperatures frequently drop well below zero but clear, crisp days are common. Snowpack normally remains in the high elevations well into June or even July making some areas inaccessible until then. Location -
The Lolo National Forest lies in western Montana, around Missoula. The crest of the Bitterroot Mountains divides Montana from Idaho and serves as the Forest's western boundary. The Continental Divide through the Scapegoat Wilderness defines the Forest's eastern boundary. The Forest has offices located in Missoula, Seeley Lake, Ninemile (near Frenchtown), Superior, and Plains.
