General Information

Description - Located within central Nevada, often referred to as the Pony Express Territory, Austin is served by US Highway 50. This central District provides many recreational opportunities, these are dominated by the Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area. Here visitors can camp, walk and picnic within the splendor of the Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area.

Attractions - Located within central Nevada, often referred to as the Pony Express Territory, Austin is served by US Highway 50. Here visitors can camp, walk and picnic within the splendor of the Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area.

Recreation - Facilities in this region include, wildlife viewing, bird watching, scenic viewing, camping, nature study, wilderness, mountain biking and hiking, plus backpacking.

Climate - The area's climate is typical of northern Nevada's desert country. Rainfall is slight, averaging less than 6 inches annually. Clear, sunny skies are the rule, with summer daytime temperatures peaking near 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Location - Austin Ranger District is located in central Nevada and is served by Highway 50, east from Ely. Also served by Routes 379 and 376.

Central Nevada - This area spans the center of Nevada, straddling U.S. Hwy. 50. It is often referred to as Pony Express Territory because U.S. Hwy. 50 parallels the historic Pony Express route.
Toiyabe National Forest - The Toiyabe National Forest is located mostly in Nevada, with a portion also in California. Sections of the Forest stretch from Lake Tahoe and Reno, south to the Las Vegas area.
