Beckwourth Ranger District



Lake Davis Recreation Area- Lake Davis Recreation Area is located central region of the Beckwourth Ranger District, just north of Portola. Lake Davis Recreation Areas offers fishing, boating and swimming. Water-skiing is not permitted. Frequent strong winds can cause the lake to become very hazardous for small craft. During the winter ice fishing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing are favored activities.
Lakes Basin Recreation Area- The Lakes Basin Recreation Area is located in the southern region of the Beckwourth Ranger District, just southwest of Beckwourth. The breathtaking scenery and surrounding crystal lakes provide the opportunity for a variety of year-round recreation activities. Camping, fishing, boating, hunting, picnicking, hiking, backpacking, swimming, and nature study can be enjoyed in the summer season. Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are popular winter activities.

General Information

Description - The Beckwourth Ranger District has several reservoirs and lakes that provide many opportunities for recreation. The Lake Davis Area and the Frenchman Lake are two of these areas. The Gold Lake Area also provides activities.

Recreation - The Beckwourth Ranger District in the Plumas National Forest offers recreationists a wide variety of outdoor experiences including: camping, picnicking, fishing, water skiing, swimming, boating, hunting, hiking, sightseeing, and winter sports such as snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

Climate - The Plumas generally experiences warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters. Weather can change rapidly during all seasons of the year. Elevation plays a major role in temperature and precipitation. This precipitation falls mainly from October through April. At higher elevations, it comes mostly in the form of snow. Clouds can build up during the summer to produce thunderstorm activity. It is wise to pack for any season with clothing that can be "layered", ready to peel off or add on as the thermometer dictates. Always include some kind of rain gear.

Location - The Beckwourth Ranger District encompasses the eastern end of the Plumas National Forest in Northern California. The southern border of this District adjoins the Tahoe National Forest. The district lies around the towns of Portola and Doyle, with State Highway 70 and US Highway 395 leading through the area.

Plumas National Forest - The Plumas National Forest is located in Northern California between the Sierra Nevada and the Cascade Ranges. The Plumas offers tree covered mountains, high alpine lakes and miles of clear running streams.
