Description
- The Talledega and Shoal Creek Ranger Districts cover about 217,000 acres along the southern end of the Appalachian Mountains where they run into northeast Alabama. The districts are located midway between Birmingham and Atlanta, and are easily accessible from Interstate 20. Attractions on the district include Lake Chinnabee and the Cheaha Mountain area. Cheaha Mountain is Alabama's highest point at 2,407 feet. It is the site of Cheaha State Park. The Cheaha Wilderness is located on the Talladega and Shoal Creek Ranger Districts. The Pinhoti Trail leads through these districts and has several connecting trails.
Recreation - Talladega Ranger District offers a multitude of outdoor activities including hiking, camping, fishing, boating, mountain biking, horseback riding, ATV and motorcycle riding. Climate - Much of Alabama receives nearly 60 inches of rain each year. The highest amount of rain reaches the region as afternoon thunderstorms in July, August and September. Summers are extremely hot and humid with temperatures frequently reaching above 100 degrees F. Summer nights cool slightly and provide a good time to travel through the region. Winter temperatures are mild, rarely dipping below 40 degrees with the humidity level at its lowest in November and December. Spring and fall are very pleasant times to visit the region. Spring brings mild temperatures and blooming trees and flowers. During the fall temperatures range from 65 to 85 degrees F with low humidity levels. The Talladega Ranger District is located in the eastern section of the Talladega National Forest in east-central Alabama. It sits just east of the cities of Talladega and Sylacauga.
