De Soto Ranger District

Black Creek itself is the primary attraction in the Black Creek area. A section of Black Creek is designated a a Wild and Scenic River. It is a popular stream for float trips as well as the centerpiece for the Black Creek Trail. The area has six Recreation Areas, most along Black Creek. The Black Creek and Leaf Wildernesses are also found here.

Recreation - This area offers numerous outdoor recreation opportunities. Float trips in canoes or kayaks, down Black Creek are very popular. The area also offers opportunities for camping, hiking, picnicking, fishing, swimming, hunting, riding motorcycles or ATV's, or simply enjoying nature in one of the wilderness areas.

Climate - Weather in this region varies with the time of year. Summers are typically very hot and humid, with afternoon and evening thunderstorms always a possibility. Summer daytime temperatures frequently reach into the upper 90's, with nighttime lows in the mid to upper 70's. Winters are often wet with some cold temperatures. Snow is uncommon. Winter days are warm enough for comfortable outdoor activities.

Location - The De Soto Ranger District encompasses the southern section of the De Soto National Forest, around the cities of Hattiesburg and Wiggins. A District Office is located in Wiggins. US Highway 49 provides the primary access through the area.
