Henry Lake on the Bessemer Ranger District, Ottawa National Forest
Description - Bessemer is located in Michigan's Western Upper Peninsula on Highway 2, and is the County Seat of Gogebic County. There is something for everyone in Gogebic County with 32 waterfalls; 1200 miles of rivers and streams; over 1,100 lakes; and 30 miles of Lake Superior shoreline just 15 minutes north on County Road 513. Three designated Federal and one State of Michigan Wilderness areas provide opportunities for solitude and scenic viewing.

Attractions - Bessemer Ranger District is the perfect spot for fishing, picnicking, swimming, boating, water-skiing, canoeing, hiking, camping and hunting for grouse, black bear, and white-tailed deer. It is in the heart of Big Snow Country where fresh powder graces five ski resorts with novice to expert trails atop three mountain ranges; kilometers of groomed cross-country trail; miles of groomed snowmobile trails; and an international ski flying event are available. The area's Fourth of July celebration and Pumpkinfest are among the finest in the Midwest, and involve the whole community. A Lake Superior fishing derby on Labor Day ushers in the fall color and salmon run for the Black River Harbor area. Bessemer Ranger Districts affords access to the North Country Trail, a National Scenic Trail which when completed will extend 4,000 miles from New York to North Dakota.

Bicycles are allowed on National Forest trails except where posted. Bicycles are also prohibited in congressionally designated Wilderness Areas. Prohibited trails include portions of the North Country National Scenic Trail.

Recreation - Bessemer Ranger District welcomes camping, hiking, biking, picnicking, sightseeing, boating, fishing, paddling, snowmobiling, skiing, and hunting.

Climate - The Upper Peninsula normally experiences mild summers with average temperatures near 70 degrees F (21 degrees C). Winter temperatures average 14 degrees F (-10 degrees C). Rain and snowmelt in the region can reach up to 200 inches annually. Travelers should be aware that significant amounts of snow could fall within a relatively short period of time resulting in hazardous road conditions.

Location - Bessemer Ranger District falls on the far western portion of the Upper Peninsula near the town of Bessemer with Forest lands reaching as far south as Wisconsin and as far north as Lake Superior.
