Description - The Rapid River Ranger District is an attractive part of the National Forest incorporating significant natural resources that include Big Bay De Noc, Little Bay De Noc, Sturgeon River, Whitefish River, Round Lake, Moss Lake, and Eighteenmile Lakes. Much of the District remains undeveloped due to the marsh habitat thus providing a reliable environment for wildlife.

Attractions - Rapid River Ranger District offers a menu of recreation opportunities to suite a variety of outdoor pursuits. The Bay de Noc - Grand Island Trail is a long-distance path of 40 miles designed for hikers and equestrians. The trail covers a number of habitats affording good wildlife viewing. The District has over 35 miles of marked and groomed snowmobile routes. All road and trails on the Forest are open to snowmobiling unless otherwise posted. The Little Bay de Noc Recreation Area has been a recreation destination now for three centuries offering camping, picnicking, swimming, hiking, boating and all at the backdrop of gorgeous scenery. Anglers find this Ranger District maintaining good populations of trout species, particularly in Whitefish River and Haymeadow Creek. The Sturgeon River and Whitefish River are two well-known canoe trails offering wildlife watching and coldwater fishing opportunities. Peninsula Point makes for a memorable day visit for both nature and history lovers.

Recreation - Rapid River Ranger District welcomes camping, hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, boating, picnicking, fishing, watching wildlife and viewing historic sites.

Climate - This area of the national forest normally experiences mild summers with average temperatures around 70 degrees F (21 degrees C). Winter temperatures average 14 degrees F (-10 degrees C). Rain and snowmelt in the region can reach up to 160 inches annually. Travelers should be aware that significant amounts of snow could fall within a relatively short period of time resulting in hazardous road conditions.

Location - The Rapid River Ranger District is located in Delta County along the shore of Big Bay De Noc, Lake Michigan. It is bordered by the Bay De Noc State Forest on the west and H13 on the east. Munising Ranger District which is in Alger County, is the northern boundary.
