Alabama River Lakes- Within Alabama River Lakes there are a variety of activities which include camping, boating, fishing and hunting.
Bankhead Lake- The Corps maintains an overlook area with picnic facilities on the east side of the river above the John Hollis Bankhead Lock and Dam. All other development is privately owned or commercial. This includes the Marina and fishing camps.
Black Warrior And Tombigbee River Lakes- The Black Warrior and Tombigbee Rivers include six lakes: Bankhead, Holt, Oliver, Warrior, Demopolis, and Coffeeville Lakes. They offer camping, boating, sailing, fishing, water-skiing, hunting, hiking, camping and picnicking.
Claiborne Lake- Claiborne Lake is the most primitive of the Alabama River Lakes. Nestled in Alabama's southwest hill country, the lake encompasses over 60 miles of the Alabama River, stretching from the Claiborne Lock and Dam to Millers Ferry Lock and Dam.
Demopolis Lake- Demopolis Lake extends 48 miles upriver on the Black Warrior and 53 miles up the Tombigbee and covers 10,000 acres. Two modern campgrounds and many day use facilities, as well as primitive camping areas, are available on Demopolis Lake.
Holt Lake- Holt Lake is a narrow winding body of water which stretches for 18 miles and encompasses 3,200 surface acres. There are several areas with facilities for boaters, swimmers, picnickers, hikers, and sightseers.
Oliver Lake- Oliver Lake is nine miles long with approximately 1,000 surface acres. Recreational activities include a marina, a fishing pier and a boat launching ramp.
R. E. Woodruff Lake- Woodruff Lake was made possible through the construction of the Robert F. Henry Lock and Dam which was completed in 1975. Woodruff Lake offers such activities as fishing, boating, water skiing, picnicking, camping, hunting, swimming and hiking.
Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway- The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway is an alternate route to the Gulf of Mexico. The Waterway provides a habitat for the local ecology as well an excellent source for outdoor recreation.
Walter F. George Lake- Walter F George Lake, located on the Alabama/Georgia border, offers a beautiful setting for numerous outdoor activities.
Warrior Lake- Warrior Lake is located six miles from Eutaw, Alabama. It has a surface area of 7,800 acres and a length of 77 miles. There are facilities for boaters, sightseers and picnickers.
William Dannelly Reservoir- Bisecting Alabama's Black Prairie Belt, the William "Bill" Dannelly Reservoir encompasses 105 miles of the Alabama River, from Millers Ferry Lock and Dam to the Robert F. Henry Lock and Dam.

General Information

Description - Alabama's lakes and reservoirs includes everything from large reservoirs of thousands of acres to small several acre ponds. Most of the lakes and reservoirs listed here are managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US Forest Service.

Recreation - These lakes and reservoirs offer various activities including boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming, sailing, and canoeing. Recreation facilities around the lakes often offer camping and picnicking.

Climate - Much of Alabama receives nearly 60 inches of rain each year. The highest amount of rain reaches the region as afternoon thunderstorms in July, August and September. Summers are extremely hot and humid with temperatures frequently reaching above 100 degrees F. Summer nights cool slightly and provide a good time to travel through the region.

Winter temperatures are mild, rarely dipping below 40 degrees with the humidity level at its lowest in November and December. Spring and fall are very pleasant times to visit the region. Spring brings mild temperatures and blooming trees and flowers. During the fall temperatures range from 65 to 85 degrees F with low humidity levels. Northern Alabama is generally cooler than the south due to its higher elevations.
