- The 26,445 acre Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area encompasses some of the Ouachita National Forest's most picturesque areas. These include the Talimena Scenic Byway in Oklahoma, Old Military Road, Horsethief Springs, Winding Stair Campground, Cedar Lake Campground, plus Cedar Lake Equestrian Camp and Pipe Spring.
Recreation - Winding Stair Mountain offers opportunities for hiking, picnicking, camping, fishing, horseback riding, hunting, and viewing scenery.
Climate - This part of Oklahoma experiences relatively mild winters and warm to hot, humid summers. The area can offer snow-free outdoor recreation opportunities during the winter months. Be prepared however, for occasional cold weather during the winter, especially at the higher elevations of the Forest.
The Winding Stair Mountain Recreation Area is situated at the western end of the Ouachita National Forest, in eastern Oklahoma. Oklahoma Highway 1 (Talimena Scenic Byway), east of Talihina, leads through the middle of the area.
