General Information

Part of Buffalo Bill State Historical Park, this state recreation area offers camping pads with electricity, primitive sites and a group picnic shelter. Buffalo Bill State Recreation Area is located next door to the

Historical Park, which makes it easy to tour the ranch house and barn that Col. William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody built for his home in North Platte during the heyday of his famous Wild West Show. Cody owned some 4,000 acres here, which were appropriately named Scout's Rest Ranch. The park encompasses 25 acres of the original ranch, including the house and barn.

This recreation area offers beautiful camping along the Platte River. There are 50-amp electrical campsites and primitive sites for the tent campers. Buffalo Bill State Recreation Area is a convenient stop off of I-80 at the North Platte Interchange. The recreation area offers fishing, picnic tables, fire rings, and hiking trails.

Climate - Nebraska has a moderate climate with high humidity. The relative humidity in this state averages 70 percent throughout the year. Winter temperatures normally average between 20 and 45 degrees F. March brings warmer weather and temperatures above freezing for most of the month. Spring is in full swing by late April when temperatures often reach above 60 degrees F. Summer temperatures reach highs of 95 degrees F frequently, with warm weather continuing into mid September. Crisp fall weather truly begins in October when nighttime temperatures begin to dip into the low 40s. The wettest time of the year in this state is late spring through summer.

Location - Head north 2.5 miles from exit 177, Highway 83, through North Platte. At Rodeo Rd, also Hwy. 30, you will turn left heading west 1.7 miles until you reach Buffalo Bill Ave. At Buffalo Bill Ave., turn right, heading north for 1 mile until you reach Scout's Rest Ranch Rd. To reach the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, turn left, heading west on Scout's Rest Ranch Rd. for 1/4 mile. To reach the Buffalo Bill State Recreation Area, take the gravel road at the corner of Buffalo Bill Ave. and Scouts Rest Ranch Rd. north 3/4 mile.
