Description - This State Scenic Highway is located in the North Coast Region passing a historic resort and logging area along the Russian River. Second growth redwood forests and eucalyptus groves form a canopy over the highway. The byway leads through colorful communities such as Guerneville.

- Route 116--Sonoma County begins at State Route 1 and follows Route 116 along the scenic Russian River. Countryside sightseeing is at its best! View emerald green hillsides punctuated by dense conifer clumps and robust vineyards. Private camping is available near Duncans Mills offering river rafting, canoeing, fishing and mere riverside relaxation. A bit farther up river, a public boat launch awaits at Monte Rio. An interesting stop along the serpentine byway is Guerneville, a railroad town that was abandoned during the Great Depression but has experienced resurgence since the 1970s. Today an array of interesting shops along with summer festivals creates a charming tourist attraction. In addition there is Johnson's Beach, a river rock swimming area, and the nearby Armstrong Redwoods State Preserve, an 805-acre park featuring the magnificent California redwoods along with an amphitheater, nature trails and a variety of picnic facilities. Exploring this wine country route is a mere 75 miles north of San Francisco, 30 miles from Napa and several miles from the Pacific Ocean with its easy public beach access.
Recreation - Route 116--Sonoma County is known for it's historical, natural and scenic attractions. Climate - Summers in this region are generally mild. Fog is often encountered near the coastline, with sunny, warmer weather more common inland in the foothills. Winters are generally cool with considerable precipitation. Wear layers of clothing to accommodate cool to warm temperatures and good walking shoes. Rain protection should be included at any time of year. Location -
The byway begins in Jenner at State Route 1 and follows Route 116 east, past Guerneville. It terminates in Sebastopol, also on Route 116.
