General Information

Description - The Coal Heritage Trail traverses four southern counties in West Virginia and winds through mountains and valleys showcasing America's remarkable industrial heritage. Isolated and remote Appalachian coalfields exploded in number and production about 100 years ago. This area was America's most productive energy-producing region, providing the economic fuel that transformed the United States.

Today, the region commemorates the history and culture of the coal industry and the effects it had on the physical and social environment. Numerous existing resources line the corridor, including coal company towns, tipples, railroad structures, strip mines, and reclamation projects.
