General Information

Description - The Ohio River Scenic Route passes through 14 counties and encompasses the birthplaces of three U. S. presidents. The byway also includes grand and historic U.S. 52, also known as the Atlantic and Pacific Highway and the U.S. Grant Memorial Highway.

This scenic route follows the Ohio River, so travelers get to enjoy majestic river views for the entire drive. The Ohio River is a historical American icon. Native Americans and early European settlers used it heavily, especially to access the West. It marked the boundary between the North and South during the slavery era, and was later the gate to freedom for many slaves. The river was also the means of progress for industrialists and merchants.

Directions from : This byway runs from the Pennsylvania border on U.S. 52 along the Ohio River to the Indiana border.

There are several ways to get to this byway:

  • From Cleveland, Ohio (beginning the byway at East Liverpool): Take Interstate 77 south to Akron and its junction with Interstate 76 east. Travel I-76 east to its junction with State Route 11 outside of Youngstown. State Route 11 will turn into U.S. 30 near East Liverpool, and then it will join with State Route 7 and the Ohio River Scenic Route.

  • From Columbus, Ohio (beginning the byway at Marietta, Ohio): Take Interstate 70 east of the National Road/U.S. 40 to Zanesville and the junction of State Route 60 south, or continue east on Interstate 70 to Cambridge and Interstate 77 south. Both State Route 60 south and Interstate 77 south will join with State Route 7 and the Ohio River Scenic Route in Marietta, Ohio.

  • From Columbus, Ohio (beginning the byway at Portsmouth, Ohio): Take U.S. 23 south towards Chillicothe, Ohio, and then continue on U.S. 23 into Portsmouth and its junction with U.S. 52 and the Ohio River Scenic Route.

  • From Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (beginning the byway at East Liverpool): Take U.S. 22/30 west from Pittsburgh, and then take U.S. 60 north to Vanport, Pennsylvania. From there, take U.S. 68 west to East Liverpool, Ohio, where it becomes State Route 39 and the beginning of the Ohio River Scenic Route.

  • From Louisville, Kentucky (beginning the byway at Cincinnati, Ohio): Take Interstate 71 north into Cincinnati where it joins with Interstate 75 north. Continue on Interstate 71 north to its junction with U.S. 52 and the beginning of the Ohio River Scenic Route.

  • From Lexington, Kentucky (beginning the byway at Cincinnati, Ohio): Take Interstate 75 north into Cincinnati, where it joins with Interstate 71 north. Continue on Interstate 71 north to its junction with U.S. 52 and the beginning of Ohio River Scenic Route.

  • From Indianapolis, Indiana (beginning the byway at Cleves, Ohio): Take Interstate 74 east to Interstate 275, then head south towards Cleves, Ohio. In Cleves, U.S. 50 and the Ohio River Scenic Route begin.
