General Information

Description - The Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, located in the northern Black Hills, is unique because the view is always close to the visitor and always upward. The narrow canyon walls rise sharply skyward from Spearfish Creek and the highway sculpted along the canyon bottom. A forest of spruce, pine, aspen, birch, and oak covers much of the hillsides. Above these slopes, the skyline is topped with an extensive ridge of vertical walled limestone cliffs.

Attractions - The Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway is known for it's Historical, Natural, Recreational and Scenic Attractions.

Directions from : Directions for Accessing the Byway From Rapid City the visitor can take Interstate 90 west to Exit 10 at Spearfish and follow the signed route of SD 14A through the city and canyon. Directions for Driving the Byway

  • The north entrance to Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway is accessed at Exit 10 off from Interstate 90 at Spearfish. The visitor can follow the signed route of SD 14A as it passes through the city of Spearfish and proceeds to Spearfish Canyon. The byway ends at the junction of US 14A and US 85.
  • The southern entrance to Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway is accessed via US 85 approximately 20 miles southwest of Deadwood. At Cheyenne Crossing US 85 intersects with US 14A. From Cheyenne Crossing proceed north on US 14A through the canyon and into the city of Spearfish. The byway ends at Exit 10 on Interstate 90.

    Report: Spearfish Canyon is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. There is a very nice lodge about half way through the canyon. I would highly reccommend this trip to anyone that is in the area.
